Charles Shapiro - Biography

President/CEO, Massmedia, Inc., Boston, Massachusetts
Owner, Bay Broadcasting, LLC, Panama City Beach, Florida

Mr. Shapiro is a recognized expert in media, advertising, promotions, and marketing, and has been quoted in industry publications including Media Week and Advertising Age.

As President of Massmedia, Mr. Shapiro holds the leadership role in the company’s advertising agency. Shapiro brings over thirty years of media and broadcast experience to the company and is responsible for the organization’s strategic direction, including sales development and customer service.

Mr. Shapiro has worked as the senior account manager, writer, producer and director with many local and regional clients, and national clients including US Airways, Investors Capital Corporation, The New England/Jacksonville/Denver Auto shows,
LiveData, Connecticut Schools of Broadcasting, and Justin Boots' Chippewa brand (a division of Berkshire Hathaway).

Prior to founding Massmedia in 1991, Mr. Shapiro held senior level management, sales, programming, promotions, news and on-air positions with CBS and ABC television affiliates, plus radio stations in markets throughout New England, Florida, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

Mr. Shapiro served for five years as a member of the US Airways CEO’s Advisory Board. Immediately following 9/11, Shapiro volunteered his resources and produced a series of national radio ads for the airline in record turn-around time. The campaign entitled “Fly the Flag” aired in NFL broadcasts and brought forth a message of public reassurance at a difficult time while providing a cost savings of $50,000 to US Airways.

In 2005, Mr. Shapiro spearheaded the acquisition, construction, branding, and sales effort for Bay Broadcasting’s 25,000 watt commercial FM radio station in Panama City Beach, Florida. The station is a Fox News and Alabama Crimson Tide Football affiliate.

Mr. Shapiro supports multiple non-profit organizations. He has provided over $100,000 in complimentary airtime in support of dozens of local charities and community groups throughout Northwest Florida. He also supports the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Brandeis University, the Museum of Fine Arts, the American Heart Association, and the Panama City-based Hearts of Hope International, a non-profit children’s home that temporarily houses orphans from around the world needing major medical care not available in their home countries. Shapiro also helped established a non-profit Christian formatted radio station in Keene, NH.

An avid game show fan and licensed private pilot, he is in all likelihood one of the few individuals to have both appeared as a car-winning contestant on The Price is Right with Bob Barker, and had the honor and thrill of flying with the Blue Angels (experiencing a 7.4 g-force).

Charlie and his wife Debra live in Newton, Massachusetts, with their two children David (17) and Rebecca (13), where he co-anchors the local television newscast.
